Just as with pinball, the biggest 'hole' in playing virtual machines in VR is the contoller (I'm somewhat fanatical about making sure the controls on my physical arcade machine are as close to the originals as possible) but there is definitely something about the sheer immersiveness of being 'in' an arcade playing an accurately rendered cabinet that makes up for this in many ways-and the author is clearly going out of his way to make these machines look authentic! I just did a comparison of playing 1942 on my physical arcade machine vs. The promise, however, is mostly there and will hopefully reach VPX standards with just a bit more baking. And I have to say that my first impression is that it is equally stunning to look at but it is also quite buggy and needs more configuration and mobility options to make it fully practical. Well, moving on, I just gave this new Time Capsule Arcade a try, and hoped for the same.

With the Crystal's ultra clear lenses and high res panels having no SDE, backglasses now looked like magazine pages, and I could now read everything on the playfield. At the time I was on the verge of building my own physical virtual pinball machine, but quickly determined that there was no longer any point to doing so since playing VPX in VR now felt like 90% of the actual experience-and no flatscreen-based virtual pinball machine could come even close to rendering the 3D playfields like VR could now do. However, late last year I was absolutely stunned when I got VPX working with my Pimax Crystal, and knew that things had suddenly changed. I'm also into high-end VR and while I've tried VR 'arcade' experiences as well (NewRetroArcade: Neon, and several Pinball sims), they never impressed me much as anything other than novelties. I've have a great multi-arcade machine that I built a few years ago and which I regularly use and enjoy.
